What are some good practices for using meta tags like keywords and descriptions?
Thanks,

Meta tags aren't a cure-all for your seo needs, but they do influence robots that crawl your site.
I use a nice a tool - www.spacky.com. It shows you how many times a keyword or phrase is searched, but I like the related results feature. |

I would like to venture to say that most Meta Tags are totally useless. I would lean more on adding appropriate content... matching your content with your meta, adding image titles and alt tags to influence your content, and making sure your Title and your domain name are in line with your content. IMO, META tags should be the lowest on your priority list. |

The META Description appears to be quite useful in that the content will sometimes be used on search engine result pages so if you write it well it can help influence people to visit your site. There isn't a hard rule on length but 200 characcters or less should prove to be more than enough for your needs. |
